Presidential Autopen Use Sparks Controversy in Biden’s Final Year

A debate is unfolding in Washington over President Joe Biden’s use of the autopen—a device that replicates his signature—for signing executive orders and pardons. Critics question whether Biden was personally involved in authorizing key decisions, especially during his final year in office.

Former Trump advisor David Sacks alleged the autopen was used for major actions without Biden’s direct involvement, though he offered no proof. While past presidents have used the device for routine tasks, its use for significant legal measures is now under scrutiny.

Concerns have grown after reports of last-minute pardons possibly signed by autopen, including decisions tied to sensitive investigations. A watchdog group, the Oversight Project, claims a consistent autopen signature was used throughout Biden’s term—except when he announced his withdrawal from the 2024 race.

House Oversight Chair James Comer is pursuing testimony from ex-Biden officials, and the Department of Justice has launched an investigation. A whistleblower has also stepped forward, adding weight to the inquiry.

While autopen use has been upheld legally in the past if authorized by the president, the current probes could reshape how such tools are used going forward.
